Libraries are a safe haven and place of respite to many in the homeless community. But what happens when the safe haven becomes unsafe? Here's how a few communities tackled the problem, and how library staff members and different city groups worked together. I understand how the librarians mentioned in this article wanted to prevent alienation of their homeless patrons but wanted to ensure that unruliness or criminal behavior didn't prevent housed patrons from also visiting the library. That had to be a hard decision but it was probably in the best interests of everyone once it became unsafe. I think that would be a challenging situation to handle in a diplomatic manner, but it sounds like these communities coped with things in a fair way.
